Best Extractor Fan For Bathroom Without Window in 2026

Included in this guide (scroll):

Bathrooms are damp, and naturally one of the most humid spaces in your house. Most of it can be attributed to showers as the water naturally evaporates into the air. Without a window, all that humidity stays trapped inside. It can make it pretty uncomfortable (and sometimes, virtually impossible) to breathe, and it’s very damaging to the porous nature of the paint and drywall inside your bathroom.

Once the air cools down, all those trapped vapours turn back into the water, encouraging mould and fungal growth to take place. Over the long run, these issues can not only cost you a hefty amount of money in repair costs, but also a bunch of allergies and health problems.

Quick Glance (See on Amazon):

If you have a windowless bathroom, it would be best to install an extractor fan into it as soon as possible. It can suck away all the built-up moisture inside your bathroom, driving it all away from the atmosphere in a matter of minutes. You’ll notice the benefits right away, including complete odour control, prevention of mould growth, and little to no rusting or paint peeling (aside from the already-damaged parts).

In this article, we’ve made a list of six of what we believe are the best extractor fans for bathrooms without windows. There’s also a complete buyer’s guide at the end to help you make the right choice, so keep reading!

What to look for in an Extractor Fan for Windowless Bathroom?

If you’ve already made the smart decision to finally get an extractor fan installed in to your bathroom, then it’s time to get technical. In this buyer’s guide, we’ve laid out everything you need to bear in mind before you hit the market to find a top-quality extractor fan for your windowless bathroom. Make sure you read this guide to the end before finalizing your purchase decision.

Air Extraction Rate

First things first, you need to check the air extraction rate of your new extractor fan and see if it’s sufficient for the size of your bathroom. Smaller bathrooms can do just fine with the 54 cubic meters per hour (or 15 litres per second), the minimum requirement in the building regulations. Larger bathrooms, however, need higher extraction rates. Keep in mind though, the bigger your fan, the noisier it generally is!

Related: How long should a bathroom extractor fan stay on for?

Size

You can get extractor fans for your bathrooms in two common sizes, 100mm and 150mm (4-inches and 6-inches). The latter is appropriate for a relatively large bathroom of at least 9 square meters or more, while the 100mm ones are good enough for most average-sized bathrooms in most households. Keep in mind though, the size of your bathroom isn’t the only factor you need to consider when you’re deciding on the right fan size to buy. The usage frequency of the bathroom also matters!

For instance, if it’s a small bathroom that’s shared by a large family, you’ll need a bigger fan to drive out all the moisture build-up and keep it ventilated. If there’s already a hole for an extractor fan in your bathroom, be sure to measure it and find a fan that fits it.

Noise

The noise of a residential extractor fan is an important consideration. It’s not a big deal in a commercial setting as the surroundings aren’t exactly quiet anyway, but a noisy domestic fan can definitely keep you up at night — especially if you’re a light sleeper.

We recommend looking for fans that are advertised to make 30 decibels or less worth of noise. If an extractor fan’s quietness is specifically important to you, look for models with silent running ball-bearing motors as they tend to be much less noisy than standard ones.

Activation or On/Off Function

While you can leave your extractor fan running 24/7 for continuous ventilation, it’d be wasteful and unnecessary, even in a bathroom without any windows. You’d only need to turn it on after using the bathroom to start moving air, and once all the moisture is driven out, you can turn it back off after a few minutes.

Depending on the model you buy, you can do this in a variety of ways. Some come with a pull cord for starting, stopping, and toggling between different rotation speeds. Or, they can simply be hooked up to your switchboard to turn on and off like a light switch.

More innovative and advanced extractor fans can even turn on automatically upon sensing a rise in humidity in the air, and turn off once things are back to normal. But, that feature is only found in highly expensive models which not everybody can afford.

Timer

As mentioned above, you don’t have to run an extractor fan 24/7 for optimal results. It only needs to stay on for a few minutes after a visit to the bathroom, which is why some models have a thoughtful timer feature. It automatically turns on once you turn the shower and lights off, and switches off after a few minutes of driving all the steam out.

What is the best extractor fan for a bathroom without windows?

We found the best extractor fan for a bathroom without windows to be the Manrose MF100T. It has a massive extraction rate of 245 m3/hr making it one of the most powerful bathroom fans available, ensuring that your windowless bathroom will be extracted quickly. Also, it is fairly quiet and out of the way which is ideal for a bathroom with no windows.

Do bathroom extractor fans need to vent outside?

Yes, you wouldn’t want all that moisture to travel into another room in your house as that would pose the same problems as mould growth and paint damage. Instead, all that vapour needs to travel out into the open air to avoid those issues altogether.

Benefits of Quieter Bathroom Fans

Quiet bathroom extractor fans offer several benefits that contribute to a more comfortable and peaceful bathroom environment.

Here are some of the advantages:

Quiet operation: The primary benefit of silent bathroom extractor fans is their quiet operation. They are specifically designed to operate at low noise levels, minimizing disturbances and creating a tranquil atmosphere in the bathroom – which in my opinion is very important! This is particularly key for sensitive individuals, light sleepers, or bathrooms located near bedrooms.

Enhanced relaxation: The absence of loud noise from the extractor fan allows for a more peaceful and relaxing bathing experience. Whether you enjoy taking long showers or unwinding in the bathtub, a silent extractor fan ensures that the soothing ambience is not disrupted by noise.

Improved privacy: In shared living spaces or bathrooms located close to common areas, silent extractor fans help maintain privacy. They prevent conversations or bathroom noises from being overheard, ensuring a discreet and private environment.

Unobtrusive design: Silent extractor fans are often designed with a sleek and unobtrusive appearance. They seamlessly blend into the bathroom decor and do not draw attention to themselves. This allows for a clean and aesthetically pleasing bathroom space.

Efficient air extraction: While silent, these fans still provide effective air extraction capabilities. They efficiently remove moisture, odours, and pollutants from the bathroom, ensuring good ventilation and maintaining a fresh and clean environment.

Energy efficiency: Many silent extractor fans are designed to be energy-efficient. They consume minimal power while still providing excellent airflow and extraction performance. This not only helps reduce electricity costs but also contributes to environmental sustainability.

Ease of installation: Silent bathroom extractor fans are typically straightforward to install, making them a convenient choice for both new construction and retrofitting projects. Many models come with user-friendly installation instructions and require minimal maintenance.

When selecting a quieter bathroom extractor fan, consider factors such as extraction rate, size, and specific features to ensure it meets the ventilation needs of your bathroom – not just that it is quiet! Consulting with professionals or experts can help you choose the right fan that balances silent operation with efficient performance.

Benefits of Inline Extractor Fans

Inline extractor fans offer several benefits in ventilation systems. Here are some of the key advantages:

Space-saving design: Inline extractor fans are installed using a ducting system, which means they don’t take up valuable space in the room. This makes them an ideal choice for situations where space is limited or aesthetics are a concern.

Efficient ventilation: Inline fans are known for their high-performance ventilation capabilities. They can effectively extract stale air, moisture, odors, and pollutants from the room, ensuring better air quality and a healthier environment.

Noise reduction: Placing the fan inline within the ducting helps to minimize noise transmission into the room. This is especially beneficial in areas where noise control is important, such as bedrooms, libraries, or offices.

Flexibility and customization: Inline extractor fans can be easily integrated into existing or new ducting systems. They offer flexibility in terms of installation location, allowing for optimal positioning to achieve the desired airflow and ventilation efficiency.

Energy efficiency: Many inline extractor fans are designed to be energy-efficient, consuming less power while delivering high-performance ventilation. This can result in energy savings and reduced operating costs over time.

Duct length optimization: By placing the fan inline, it becomes easier to optimize the length and layout of the ducting system. This can help minimize pressure drops, improve airflow distribution, and enhance overall system efficiency.

Remote operation: Some inline extractor fans come with remote control options, allowing convenient operation from a distance. This is particularly useful in hard-to-reach areas or situations where manual control is impractical.

It’s important to keep in mind that depending on the type, brand, and application, the precise advantages and characteristics of inline extractor fans may change. Therefore, it is advised to take into account your unique ventilation needs and speak with manufacturers or experts to select the best inline extractor fan for your requirements.

Benefits of Powerful Bathroom Fans

Powerful bathroom extractor fans offer several benefits in terms of ventilation and air quality.

Here are some of the key advantages:

Effective moisture removal: Powerful bathroom extractor fans are designed to quickly and efficiently remove moisture from the bathroom. This helps to prevent the build-up of condensation, which can lead to mould, mildew, and damage to walls, ceilings, and fixtures. By reducing moisture, powerful extractor fans contribute to a drier and healthier bathroom environment.

Improved air circulation: A powerful extractor fan will also promote better air circulation in your bathroom. It helps to remove stagnant air, odours, and pollutants, replacing them with fresh outdoor air. This results in a more comfortable and pleasant atmosphere, which we can all agree is important in a bathroom.

Reduced humidity: High humidity levels in the bathroom can cause discomfort and create an ideal breeding ground for mould and bacteria. Powerful extractor fans are effective at reducing humidity levels by expelling moist air and bringing in fresh air from outside.

Odour elimination: Bathroom odours can be unpleasant and linger in the air, unfortunately. A powerful extractor fan helps to quickly remove odours, improving the overall freshness of your bathroom. This is especially beneficial in shared or small bathrooms.

Quick ventilation: Powerful extractor fans are known to have a higher extraction rate, allowing them to quickly exchange the air in the bathroom. This is particularly useful after using the shower or bath when there is a significant release of moisture and steam.

Reduced condensation on surfaces: By efficiently removing moisture and steam, powerful extractor fans also help to minimize condensation on mirrors, windows, and other surfaces in the bathroom. This makes it easier to maintain a clear view and reduces the need for frequent wiping or cleaning.

Improved air quality: With their strong extraction power, powerful bathroom extractor fans contribute to better indoor air quality by removing pollutants, allergens, and potential contaminants. This can be especially beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions or allergies, like asthma, for example.

While they have their benefits, it’s important to choose a powerful extractor fan that is appropriate for the size of your bathroom and meets the necessary ventilation requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the most powerful extractor fan for a bathroom?

The most powerful extractor fan for a bathroom currently is the Manrose MF100T. It has a massive extraction rate of 245 m3/hr making it one of the most powerful 4-inch bathroom fans available. There are some other extraction fans with the same or similar extraction rates but they are nowhere near as popular, making the MF100T  truly deserving of this top spot.

How powerful should a bathroom fan be?

According to the Building Regulations, a bathroom fan needs to have an extractor rate of at least 15 l/s. Most bathroom fans more than exceed this as you may have noticed from our list. Ultimately, it all depends upon your application, how big the room is, how big an extraction rate you need etc.

Can a bathroom fan be too strong?

Buying an extractor fan that is too strong is a waste of money. Most extractor fans on the market that are designed for bathrooms will be more than suitable. However, if you have a smaller bathroom and a very powerful fan, even though the cost to run an extractor fan is inexpensive, it will mean you are wasting electricity and money.

How much power does a bathroom extractor fan use?

On average, a bathroom extractor fan uses between 4 and 38 watts of electricity, depending on the model, which is very low in comparison to other appliances like a light bulb, for example.

What are the types of powerful bathroom fans?

There are many different types of powerful bathroom fans on the market. The inline fan, which is mounted in the ceiling or attic and connected to a vent in the bathroom, is one of the most well-liked models. These fans are strong and effective since they move a lot of air and immediately lower humidity levels. A wall-mounted fan is another style; it is installed directly on the wall and has a built-in duct to exhaust air outside. These fans are perfect for restrooms with little room above the vanity. There are also combo fans that have built-in lights and heaters, offering warmth and ventilation. The most common type is the axial fan but they are usually not very powerful. In the end, the kind of strong bathroom fan you select will rely on your unique requirements and tastes.

Conclusion

And there you have it. Six of the most powerful extractor fans on the market. While we have picked the MF100T as our top powerful bathroom extractor fan, all of the other fans on this list are excellent, extremely powerful bathroom fans, with lots of great features. As you may have noticed, as well as these top 6, we also sorted them into most popular, cheapest, quietest, etc. This was because it can still be fairly difficult to pick the right one even when they are shortlisted to just six.

One thing to keep in mind is that, if the extractor fan is more powerful, it will also, of course, be noisier. Fortunately, most if not all of the top powerful bathroom fans are inline fans which therefore provide a quieter running noise, as they are typically installed in the loft or wall cavity, further away from the bathroom.

What are the Different Types of Extractor Fans?

There are several types of extractor fans available, each designed to meet specific needs.

These include:

Axial

Axial fans work by drawing air in from one side of the fan and expelling it out the other side, creating a flow of air that helps to circulate and refresh the air within the space.

Axial extractor fans are typically more affordable and easier to install than other types of fans, and they can be used in a variety of settings, from homes and offices to industrial and commercial buildings.

Centrifugal

Centrifugal fans work by drawing air in through the centre of the fan and then using centrifugal force to expel it outwards through the fan blades.

Centrifugal extractor fans are known for their efficiency and ability to move large volumes of air.

Inline

An inline extractor fan is a type of ventilation system that is installed within a duct or in line with the ductwork.

It is a fan that is designed to extract air from a specific area, such as a bathroom or kitchen, and then push it out through a duct to the outside of the building.

This type of fan is often used in situations where the traditional ceiling or wall-mounted fans are not practical or desirable.

An inline extractor fan is generally more powerful than other types of fans and can be installed in a variety of locations, making it a versatile option for many different types of buildings and spaces. I personally believe this type is the best bathroom fan extractor you can get on the market.

Mixed Flow

A mixed flow extractor fan works by combining the benefits of both axial and centrifugal fans, creating a hybrid design that allows for more efficient airflow.

Mixed Flow fans are known for their quiet operation and energy efficiency, making them a popular choice for those looking to improve indoor air quality while reducing their energy bills.

These fans can be used in a variety of settings, including bathrooms, kitchens, and commercial spaces.

How to pick the best bathroom extractor fan for your home

When buying the best bathroom exhaust fan, there are several features and factors to consider to ensure you make the right choice.

Here are some important considerations:

Extraction Rate

Look for the extraction capacity or airflow rate of the fan, measured in cubic meters per hour (m³/h). Choose a fan with a suitable extraction capacity for the size of your bathroom. As a general guideline, a fan should be able to extract the air in the bathroom at least 8-10 times per hour.

Use our extraction rate calculator if you aren’t sure what you need for your sized bathroom.

Noise Level

Consider the noise level of the fan, usually measured in decibels (dB). A quieter fan is desirable, especially if you have a small bathroom or if noise is a concern for you. Look for fans with lower dB ratings for quieter operation.

Energy Efficiency

Check the energy efficiency rating of the fan. Look for fans with higher energy efficiency to minimize electricity consumption and reduce operating costs over time.

Humidity Sensor

Consider a fan with a built-in humidity sensor. These fans automatically activate when the humidity levels rise above a certain threshold and turn off when the levels decrease. It helps prevent excess moisture and condensation, enhancing air quality and reducing the risk of mould and mildew growth.

Timer Function

Look for a fan with a timer function that allows you to set the fan to run for a specific duration after you leave the bathroom. This feature helps ensure proper ventilation and can be useful for eliminating odours.

IP Rating

Check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of the fan. For bathroom use, it is recommended to choose a fan with a higher IP rating, such as IP44 or above. This ensures that the fan is adequately protected against water splashes and is suitable for installation in wet areas.

Design and Aesthetics

Consider the design and aesthetics of the fan to match your bathroom décor. There are various styles and finishes available, including standard models, discreet low-profile designs, and even decorative options.

Installation and Maintenance

Look for a fan that is easy to install and maintain. Consider features such as removable covers for easy cleaning, accessible wiring connections, and clear installation instructions.

Brand and Warranty

Research reputable brands that are known for producing reliable and durable extractor fans. Check the warranty provided by the manufacturer to ensure proper support in case of any issues.

Budget

Determine your budget range and find a fan that offers a balance between the desired features and affordability. Consider the long-term benefits and energy savings when evaluating the cost.

By considering these factors, you can select a bathroom extractor fan that suits your specific needs, promotes good air quality, and enhances the overall bathroom experience.

Conclusion

And that concludes this guide – six of the best extractor fans for bathrooms out right now. While we have picked the Envirovent SIL100T as our top bathroom extractor fan pick, all of the other fans on this list are excellent, very popular bathroom fans, with lots of nice features.

As you may have noticed, as well as the 6 best bathroom fans listed above, we also sorted them into most popular, cheapest, quietest etc. This was because it can still be fairly difficult to choose the right fan even when they are shortlisted to just six.

One thing to keep in mind is that, although these are all our best fan picks, they still may not be suitable for your chosen application. Make sure that you do your research and work out what your actual requirements are before you purchase a fan.

Resolved: Bathroom Extractor Fan Not Working and Common Problems that Cause it.

Need a replacement? Our Top Picks (scroll):

Have you ever walked into your bathroom after a shower and noticed the mirror is still all fogged up?

If your bathroom extractor fan isn’t working properly, you may be dealing with excess moisture and poor air quality.

But don’t worry, this is a common issue that can be easily resolved.

Extractor fans are an important part of any bathroom.

They help to remove excess moisture, prevent mould and mildew growth, and improve overall air quality. However, if your fan isn’t working, it can lead to a range of problems.

If you’re experiencing issues with your bathroom extractor fan, it’s important to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Not only can it impact your health, but it can also cause damage to your home.

In this article, we’ll discuss some common reasons why your fan may not be working and provide some helpful tips to get it back up and running.

Why is my Bathroom Extractor Fan Not Working?

A common reason why your bathroom extractor may not be working is because of a build-up of dust and dirt.

Dust and dirt can cause your extractor fan to stop working altogether.

It can obstruct or cause resistance to the blades, stopping the extractor fan from doing its job.

One of my family members experienced issues with their extractor fan and it turned out it was due to clogged ducts, which were resolved through cleaning and unclogging. This is important in order to maintain proper airflow in your bathroom or shower.

Regular maintenance of home electrical appliances is important to prevent dust and dirt build-up on blades, which can lead to reduced speed and malfunctioning.

What else causes my bathroom extractor fan to stop working?

As well as dust and dirt, there are many common causes that can stop your bathroom extractor fan from working.

If your extractor fan is not working correctly, it is essential to identify the cause of the malfunction and address it promptly to avoid further damage or safety hazards.

Regular maintenance of your extractor fan can help prevent malfunctions and ensure that it operates efficiently.

Here are some common reasons that cause extractor fan malfunction in your bathroom.

Lack of power supply

If your bathroom extractor fan is not functioning properly, it may be due to a power supply disruption.

The fan requires electricity to operate, and any issues with electrical current flow can result in malfunction.

Incorrect wiring and connections, as well as poorly wired switch circuits, can also cause the fan to not work.

Unfortunately, unless you are an electrician yourself you will likely need to get a professional to come in and take a look at it.

Dirty fan blades or motor

The accumulation of dirt and debris in bathroom extractor fans can result in decreased performance. This can lead to clogging of fan blades and motors, which in turn reduces airflow and places greater strain on the motor, and eventually cause it to stop working.

  • Insufficient ventilation in the bathroom may lead to reduced extraction of moist air, which could potentially increase the likelihood of mould growth and water damage.
  • Regularly cleaning the fan blades and motor can improve the efficiency and lifespan of the ventilation unit.
  • Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs or the need for a replacement.

Additionally, insufficient airflow causing overheating in electrical components may result in malfunction and making you incur unnecessary costs.

Homeowners should do regular preventative maintenance, which includes cleaning or even replacing the extractor fan if it is old.

Installing fans that have energy-efficient motors or humidity sensors can improve performance while reducing power usage.

These steps can prevent costly repairs and promote a healthy home.

Faulty capacitor or relay switch

If the bathroom fan is stuck on, it’s most likely a faulty capacitor, although an unusual ghost haunting is also possible! (Just kidding)

A bathroom extractor fan that stops working may have a faulty capacitor or relay switch.

The capacitor provides an initial push to the motor by building up some charge. However, a faulty capacitor can cause the motor to struggle to start.

The relay switch directs energy flow, but worn or corroded contacts can cause it to need more energy, risking overheating or ignition.

Again, unless you are an electrician yourself you will likely need to get a professional in or it might just be cheaper to replace the extractor fan altogether.

Blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker

If your bathroom extractor fan isn’t functioning correctly, it could be due to a circuit interruption or tripped breaker.

To protect your home from damage and danger, this breaker will automatically shut off.

To get things back on track, follow these 3 steps:

  1. Find the circuit panel box and see which circuit has tripped.
  2. Reset the specific circuit by switching it off and then on again.
  3. Flip the extractor fan switch to see if it works properly.

If this adjustment doesn’t work, call an electrician for help.

Causes of blown fuses and tripped circuits can include power surges, overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, and unexpected system shutdowns.

Don’t ignore minor issues – they can quickly become dangerous.

Broken fan belt or loose screws

If your bathroom jam session sounds like a DJ scratching, it’s probably due to a broken fan belt or loose screws.

The fan belt is the link between the motor and the blades, providing motion for air circulation.

Loose screws can cause vibration which weakens other parts in the unit.

Listen out for strange sounds coming from your fan.

If you notice reduced airflow and poor efficiency, it’s time to investigate.

Ignoring this could lead to more expensive repairs of other components like the bearings.

Blocked or damaged air ducts

Malfunctioning bathroom extractor fans can be caused by blocked or damaged air passages.

Common causes include: dust, debris, insects, worn-out parts, moisture, lack of ventilation, power issues, undersized fan & vent pipe, and spatial constraints.

To fix these, clean ducts, replace parts, seal leaks, reduce dampness, restore electricity, upgrade fan capacity, and reconsider your ventilation setup.

As mentioned through, regular testing and maintenance is key to avoiding your bathroom extractor fan stopping altogether, and most importantly, saving you money!

Troubleshooting Your Extractor Fan

As you will likely know, if your extractor fan suddenly stops working, it can become a major inconvenience and even a hazard.

Troubleshooting the problem is crucial to ensure that the fan is functioning correctly and efficiently.

Ignoring the issue can lead to a buildup of grease and dirt, which can cause the fan to malfunction permanently.

Therefore, it is important to address the problem as soon as possible and seek professional assistance if necessary.

Here are some steps to take when troubleshooting your extractor fan.

Checking power supply

To make sure your bathroom extractor fan is running optimally, it is essential to check the power supply.

Here’s a quick guide on how to do this:

Please Note: It is always recommended to get an electrician to do this for you, as it is dangerous.

  1. Switch off the power from the mains.
  2. Make sure there’s no electricity running by first checking other devices in your bathroom.
  3. Remove the cover of the extractor fan to access the wiring.
  4. Use a voltage tester to check for electricity. It should be around 220 volts on a test meter for regular operation.
  5. If there’s no electricity, try checking the fuse box or call an electrician for help.

Be careful! Exposed wires and loose connections can be dangerous. Only someone who knows electrical work should tackle them.

Safety must be a priority when doing this. If you have any doubts, get help from a professional electrician.

According to RHA (2022), “Every year, faulty electrics or electrical equipment cause around 70 deaths and 350,000 injuries in UK homes.”

Be safe when dealing with electrical appliances at home, safety first!

Cleaning fan blades and motor

Another thing to do is don’t forget to clean the fan blades and motor.

To keep your bathroom fan in tip-top shape, regular maintenance is a must. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Cut the power and remove its cover.
  2. Wipe the blades with a cloth or use a brush to remove dust.
  3. Dampen a cloth with warm water & mild detergent to clean the fan. Avoid moisture near electrical parts.
  4. Use compressed air or a vacuum cleaner to clear dirt and debris from the motor housing.
  5. Lubricate bearings with silicone-based lubricant or machine oil.

Neglecting maintenance can reduce performance and lead to expensive repairs.

Pro Tip: To prevent moisture buildup that leads to mould, run the extractor fan for 5-15 minutes after each shower, depending on the size of your bathroom.

Testing capacitor and relay switch

To get the best performance from your bathroom extractor fan, test its capacitor and relay switch.

Here’s how to do so:

  1. Turn off the power supply.
  2. Locate the capacitor and relay switch.
  3. Use a multimeter to check their continuity.

If they fail the test it might be best to simply replace the extractor fan altogether. This will give you maximum performance.

Be sure to wear safety gear when working with electrical components.

Replacing blown fuse or resetting circuit breaker

When your bathroom extractor fan stops working, it might be caused by a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

Here’s how to resolve it:

  1. Turn off the fan, unplug it from the socket.
  2. Check if it’s a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker:
    • For a blown fuse, open the fan cover and check for the fuse. Replace if needed.
    • For a tripped circuit breaker, go to the main electrical panel. Find the one for the bathroom’s circuits, switch it off then back on.
  3. If you replaced a fuse or reset the breaker, plug in the fan and turn it on. If not, other issues might be at play.

Safety first! Wear protective gear like gloves and glasses when changing fuses. If in doubt, get an electrician.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for signs of wear and tear on fan components.

Tightening fan belt and screws

To make sure your bathroom exhaust fan runs smoothly, you need to check and secure its components regularly. This includes the belt and screws. Here are five easy steps to secure your extractor fan’s belt and screws:

  1. Switch off the electricity at the main switchboard.
  2. Take the cover off the fan unit.
  3. Tighten any loose screws on the fan blades and housing using a screwdriver.
  4. Loosen the bolt that holds the motor in place with an adjustable wrench.
  5. Tighten the motor by pulling it towards you while tightening the bolt. Then properly re-align and rotate it by hand to make sure it works well.

Be careful not to over-tighten, as this might damage the motor or cause extra vibration and too much wear and tear.

Put on some gloves since belts can get hot due to friction when tightened.

Clearing air ducts

It’s essential to remove blockages from the air ducts of your bathroom extractor fan for optimal performance. This will keep your bathroom free of odours and moisture. Follow these four simple steps:

  1. Turn off the power supply.
  2. Unscrew the cover.
  3. Clean the interior of the air ducts using a soft brush or damp cloth.
  4. Refit the cover securely.

Also, clean or replace the filter regularly.

Use appropriate cleaning solutions and methods without causing damage.

Maintenance of the extractor fan helps with airflow and increases its lifespan. Cleaning it regularly keeps the bathroom hygienic and pleasant.

How To Avoid Your Bathroom Extractor Fan Malfunctioning

To avoid your bathroom extractor fan from stopping working, it is important to regularly clean and maintain it.

This includes removing any dust or debris from the fan blades and ensuring that the vent and ductwork are clear of any obstructions.

It is also important to check that the fan is properly installed and wired and that the motor and bearings are lubricated.

Additionally, avoiding excessive use of harsh cleaning chemicals and ensuring proper ventilation in the bathroom can help prolong the life of your extractor fan.

By taking these simple steps, you can avoid the frustration and inconvenience of a malfunctioning bathroom extractor fan.

Best Humidistat Extractor Fan of 2026

As you may know, extractor fans can be activated by a number of different modules. One of my favourite extractor fan control modules is the humidistat or humidity sensor.

A humidistat, also known as a hygrostat, is the type of module that activates when the humidity of your bathroom reaches a certain level. Once it reaches a specific humidity level, the extractor fan is activated and then extracts the air.

I have collated a list of the best humidistat extractor fans to save you the trouble of having to!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Best Humidistat Extractor Fan?

We found the Best Humidistat Extractor Fan to be the Xpelair C4HTS. It is one of the most popular humidistat extractor fans on the market, runs quietly at just 16dB, has two speed options (15l/s and 21 l/s), features a run-on timer, and more!

Are humidity extractor fans any good?

Humidity extractor fans can be very effective in reducing excess moisture in a room or area. They work by drawing in humid air and expelling it outside, which can help prevent mould growth, reduce the risk of respiratory problems, and improve overall air quality. However, the effectiveness of a humidity extractor fan depends on several factors, such as the size of the fan, the size of the room, and how often the fan is used. It is also important to properly maintain the fan, including regularly cleaning the filters and ensuring that it is installed correctly. Overall, humidity extractor fans can be a useful tool in managing humidity levels, but it is important to do your research and choose a high-quality fan that is appropriate for your specific needs.

What does a humidistat do on an extractor fan?

A humidistat is a device that measures the level of humidity in the air. When it is installed on an extractor fan, it helps to regulate the amount of moisture in a room or space by automatically turning the fan on or off depending on the humidity level. When the humidity is high, the humidistat will activate the fan to remove excess moisture from the air, which can help prevent mould and mildew growth, reduce odours, and improve indoor air quality. The humidistat also helps to save energy by only running the fan when it is needed, rather than constantly running it at full speed. Overall, the addition of a humidistat to an extractor fan can help to create a more comfortable and healthy living environment.

Should I get a bathroom fan with a humidity sensor?

Yes, it is highly recommended to get a bathroom fan with a humidity sensor. This type of fan can detect the level of humidity in the bathroom and automatically turn on and off accordingly. This is important because high humidity levels can cause mould and mildew growth, which can be harmful to your health and damage your bathroom. A bathroom fan with a humidity sensor can also help reduce moisture buildup, prevent condensation on mirrors and walls, and improve air quality. In addition, this type of fan is convenient and energy-efficient, as it only runs when needed. Overall, investing in a bathroom fan with a humidity sensor is a smart choice for maintaining a healthy and comfortable bathroom environment.

One thing to keep in mind is during hotter days, if the humidity in the air is high enough, it will trigger your humidistat to activate. This may mean that you will need to set it on a less sensitive level – 60% humidity should be more than sufficient. In addition, make sure that you are not constantly configuring or adjusting your humidistat as they are very sensitive modules and you may damage them by mistake. For this reason, many people will opt for a timer-controlled extractor fan over a humidity-sensing extractor fan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Best Continuous Running Extractor Fan?

We found the Best Continuous Running Extractor Fan to be the Greenwood Airvac Unity CV2GIP. It is one of the most popular Continuous Running Extractor Fans on the market, runs quietly at 10dB, has a low SFP of 0.16, features a 3-year warranty, uses low energy so perfect for landlords, and more!

What is a continuous-running extractor fan?

A continuously running extractor fan is a ventilation system that continuously pulls air from indoors into the outdoors. Such fans are often mounted on walls and can be used to help control moisture, heat, and airborne odour levels in the home. They are typically rated for efficiency at extraction rates of over 20 cubic metres per hour, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. The sound is low when compared to other mechanical ventilation systems, and the motor can last for many years with minimal maintenance. Continuously running extractor fans are therefore widely used both in residential and commercial settings but typically favoured in commercial settings.

Should an extractor fan be on all the time?

Generally, it is not necessary for an extractor fan to be left on all the time. This can be a waste of electricity and may cause discomfort in the home if too much air is being circulated, which could lead to draughts. Instead, it should only be used when it is needed, such as during cooking or when using the bathroom, in order to reduce moisture levels and help circulate fresh air within the home. This can also help prevent condensation from building up within walls and ceilings, which can damage property over time.

Related: Solar Powered Extractor Fan

How long can you run an extractor fan?

An extractor fan can run for as long as it is needed, provided that it has the appropriate power supply. Most extractor fans come with a built-in thermostat that allows you to set and monitor the amount of time the fan is running. This helps reduce energy consumption and ensures that the fan doesn’t become too hot during operation. If left on continually, it is important to ensure ventilation is maintained in the form of fresh air entering rooms, as extracting air may cause problems such as pressurisation and extraction that impair the control of room temperatures.

Related: How long should a bathroom fan run for?

Does an extractor fan use a lot of electricity?

Extractor fans can use a lot of electricity, depending on the size and power of the fan. Smaller fans or those with lower power settings typically use less electricity as they are running slower and at a lower intensity compared to more powerful extractor fans. It is important to note that most extractor fans also feature timers, so you can set them to turn off after a certain amount of time in order to save energy. Ultimately, it depends on your specific fan and the settings for how much electricity an extractor fan will use.
