How much Electricity does a Cooker Hood use?

Do you know how much electricity a cooker hood uses? Well, let’s find out! Ideally, you should aim to use the most energy-efficient appliances at home. This blog post will help you calculate how much electricity your cooker hood uses so that you can get a general idea of what it is.

The power consumption of a standard cooker hood can start from around 60 watts up to 250 watts or so. Typically, the more powerful the cooker hood (higher extraction rate e.g.), the higher the power consumption.

What is the average cost of an hour of electricity?

The average price of an hour of power for a family in the UK, at the time of writing, is around £0.31.8p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), though this will depend on your electricity provider and the type of applications you use.

What is a kilowatt-hour (kWh)?

You may have heard of watts, as well as kilowatts, which is simply 1000 watts.

A kWh is a measure of how much electricity you’d use if you used one kilowatt for an hour, similarly, a Wh is a watt-hour – but most electricity providers charge based on kWh. You can think of it as being the same as if you’d have one 1000 Watt cooker hood (that’s a crazily high-powered cooker hood!) switched on for an hour.

How much electricity does a cooker hood use in an hour?

In order to work out how much electricity a cooker hood uses in an hour, we simply need to divide the wattage of a cooker hood by one thousand. For example, if we take the Klarstein Cooker Hood, it has a wattage of 190 – which is fairly average for a cooker hood.

In order to calculate how much electricity this cooker hood uses we need to do the following:

190 / 1000 = 0.19 kWh

How much does it cost to use a cooker hood for an hour?

Continuing with our example, now that we have the kWh of the Klarstein hood, we now need to multiply the cost of an hour of electricity – which as mentioned above, is approximately £0.32p.

0.19 kWh x £0.32p = £0.0608p

Therefore, running a cooker hood for one hour would cost approximately £0.608p.

Are cooker hoods expensive to run?

As we can see by the calculation above, it is quite inexpensive to run a cooker hood for just an hour – but this figure can add up over time. Although it is affected by many factors, this is something to consider when choosing a cooker hood for your kitchen.

What factors affect the cost to run a cooker hood?

There are a number of factors that can make the cost to run a cooker hood fluctuate quite a bit.

The amount of electricity a cooker hood uses depends on:

  1. The power consumed by the motor
  2. The number and type of speeds available on your cooker hood (it is more efficient to change speeds than to turn a big motor on/off)
  3. The room’s volume
  4. How long you run your hood for
  5. The efficiency of the cooker hood

How to keep running costs low?

As discussed earlier, while the cost to run a cooker hood is quite low, it can add up over time.

Here are some steps to keep your electricity bill costs low:

  1. To save money on your electricity bill, you can adjust the hood’s speed depending upon how high an extraction you need.
  2. It is also important to ensure that the extraction rate of a cooker hood is not too high for a room or it may have a negative impact on temperature.
  3. Cooker Hoods should not be run for more than two hours at one time, i.e. when cooking, preparing food, after your shower or bath etc.
  4. For typical residential applications in a kitchen, for example, you shouldn’t ever need to keep it permanently running.

What is a Canopy Hood?

Cooker hoods are an essential part of any kitchen. They provide a safe and effective way to remove smoke, steam and odours from the air, making your kitchen a more pleasant place to cook. Cooker hoods come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and one great type is the canopy hood.

In this post, we are going to be discussing everything there is to know about canopy hoods, specifically what they are and how they work, as they’re a bit different to the traditional cooker hood that you might imagine in your kitchen – especially due to how they are designed. Let’s get into it!

What are Canopy Cooker Hoods?

Canopy hoods are a type of extractor fan designed to fit into cabinets, canopies and wall units. They provide the extraction and lighting components of a regular cooker hood, but without the bulk or size of a standalone unit.

As they are installed under the cabinetry they blend seamlessly into existing kitchen designs, while also preventing cooker hoods from conflicting with other kitchen items like chimney breasts and decorative canopies.

They are often preferred for this reason, especially when you don’t want them to stick out or take over your kitchen’s decor.

Canopy Hoods, together with Visor Hoods, are classed as Integrated Cooker Hoods.

What is the difference between a Canopy and a Visor Cooker Hood?

As mentioned above, a canopy cooker hood fits into a decorative chimney breast or as part of a cupboard. You typically would only see the very bottom face of it, whereas a visor cooker hood is exposed. They are usually much bigger than visor hoods with much larger extraction rates.

On the other hand, a visor hood is one that is smaller, usually flat, that fits underneath your kitchen cabinets that is fairly exposed.

How Does a Canopy Cooker Hood Work?

A canopy hood works exactly like a regular cooker hood – it extracts the air, pulls it through some kind of filter thereby cleansing it, and then expels the air back into the kitchen or through ducting to the outside of the property.

As mentioned earlier, the main difference is its design. Canopy hoods are chosen for their discrete low-profile build. They can be part of a cupboard or the chimney while being totally functional.

Advantages of Canopy Hoods

Canopy cooker hoods offer a variety of benefits for your kitchen. They provide efficient extraction of smoke, steam and condensation from the air reducing odours and moisture in the kitchen. Additionally, these cooker hoods can be easily adjusted to precisely direct airflow away from any area of your cooking space, making them great for cooking with multiple pans or dishes at once. By combining efficient extraction with ease of use and adjustability, canopy cooker hoods make it easy to get delicious results with any type of cuisine.
